Grounded Factory Portraits: Sofia Garvner Agoo

Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do/ who you are.

First of all, thank you so much for sharing and caring in such a beautiful way, lifting up women around the world to empower them. Empowering the women around me is one of my hottest topic these days. I’m currently a Jivamukti Yoga teacher at Pranama and in my private home yoga studio Shala Agoo. I spend much time on the mat and in retreats to learn more and go deeper into my own practice. I’m also a Mindfulness Meditation Leader at different companies around town and in a few weeks time I will offer classes in Shakti Yoga - a feminine approach to yoga asana, meditation and satsang.

My history is a long journey from pure innocence in my young 20’s to deep suffering in 30’s. I suddenly found myself in the costume consumption and ignorance dresses us in - - the not “good enough” state of mind, a life in comparison and on a quest to search for happiness and fulfillment outside of myself. I’ve gone through it all; sexual abusment, anorexia, alcoholism, depression, acne, migraines, endometriosis, HPV, self hate, etc etc etc. Through yoga and finally the death of my best friend, the amazingness himself Mr Rami Mizrahi, I got a wake up call from the Divine. I decided to change the course of my life. I dove deep during my TT in Costa Rica, I manifested the love of my life, and as a cherry on top ignited the power within me (Kundalini). Today, I live and breath yoga, oneness, empowerment, leadership of the self, connection to the divine, the higher Self and the “Vooooooooiiiid" (that’s citing Dr Joe Dispenza). I trust and love myself, I trust and let the Universe serve it’s splendour through me being, instead of me doing. I also love my husband, photographer and Mr manifestor himself Filip Agoo. Together we elevate and develop each other, our love so deep and wide. I am blessed to have such a beautiful soul by my side every day. Stockholm is currently where we reside and the world our arena where we live into our vision to make the world a more playful and kind place through our charity art project ABC Charity - the first ever human alphabet photographed together with thousands of kids around the world.

What does yoga mean to you?

The fist time I practiced yoga in New York back in 2003 I knew that I had finally found my “home". Yoga is now my way of life. Yoga is the way I experience “reality”, the tools I use to connect within the higher Self, to the place within that is eternal and divine and where the soul heals and makes deals with the future. Yoga has taught me to open up the eye looking inwards, to what is real. It has made me come to the understanding that we are all "spiritual beings having a human experience, not human beings having a spiritual experience" (quote by Wayne Dyer). I have experienced Yoga to be the way as to how become receptive to the divine that is within us all. We are all capable of opening up if we give it our attention and place our intention on the actual goal to reach this state of oneness with all human beings and living things, one with the trees, the animals, the air we breath, the entire cosmos. Just like practicing to become a swimmer, you practice to open your own heart to oneness, to yoga.

Do you have a favorite studio/ retreat you want to share with us?

My favorite place is on the mat and meditation pillow, wherever in the world or time it might be. It is also of course very lovely to share time on the mat with teacher’s who shares yoga with pure passion. If the teacher is excited and all in, then there is energy in the room and we can together vibrate high. One teacher who delivers this endlessly is Mira Dakini Skogsdotter. She’s not teaching at any studio in Stockholm (yet) however together we will launch a deep and powerful feminine approach to yoga - Shakti Yoga - this Fall in studios around town (studios like Pranama), so stay tuned - we will deliver pure bliss, loads of healing and sacred space to connect and empower each other to become the best versions of ourselves <3

On the yoga mat I drink liters of air through my nostrils in a smooth long inhalation, followed by very long calming exhale through the mouth as I sigh “Aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh”. It’s like an OM but less controlled and more free to move up and down the scale and pass through all energy centers. It’s like healing with sound and breath all in once. If I’m all wired up, it also helps to sit in easy pose and press the thighs and hip bones down. Off the mat I do tapping to ground, like tapping on my cheek bones with my four fingers squeezed tight together, and on the site of my ribs to kick-start the digestive system as that will start moving energy down. I also eat nuts and drink lukewarm water. If I need a lot of grounding a lay down on my back and ask a friend to push me down into the earth as I focus on long smooth exhales, that will calm the nervous system down and start organise the front side of the neo-cortex, the CEO of the brain.
